Zaryab, who was a student of grade 11, always dreamed of becoming a professional cricketer and play for his country. Such was his dream to wear the green-shirt, it ended up taking his life. On Tuesday, Muhammad Zaryab, after passing the age limit to make it to the national team, committed suicide.

A resident of Model Colony Karachi, Zaryab was founding hanging inside his house. Zaryab had exceeded the age limit and was dropped from the national side. This shattered Zaryab’s childhood dream and the only way he could find out was to take his own life. Zaryab’s father, Aamer Hanif, too had been an international cricketer for Pakistan who played 5 One-Day International matches for the country.

However, speaking to a national daily of Pakistan, Zaryab’s father redirected the blame on coaches of the national side who groom young cricketers. A top official of the Zone four Karachi said that Zaryab had not been dropped from the team for exceeding age limit, it was just one match where the issue had erupted. Whatever the case may be, whoever may be responsible, the tragic truth is that a young, talented life is lost because apparently, he was ‘too old’ to play in the national side. If a 19-year-old is subjected to such a policy from the boards, Pakistanis who are not in their teenage anymore should never think of playing cricket.

This incident also proves that certain elements of society, be it our families or the people around us, degrade us so much at our failures, generating expectations, that even a minor hurdle in our ways can end up being lethal.
