Asma was a third-year student at a medical college in Abbottabad, she dreamt to be a doctor to serve humanity and her motherland. On Saturday, when Asma reached home along with her sister-in-law, Mujahid Afridi and his accomplice Saqibullah opened fire at her and fled the crime scene soon after. Asma received three bullets and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Ramzana Bibi, 25, of Jaliyanwala village had been engaged to Asif, but later their families called off their engagement over a disagreement. Asif and his family tried to settle the issue but failed and the girl’s family arranged her marriage elsewhere. Ramzana was visiting her parents when Asif also reached there. The suspect called the woman outside the house, shot her dead and tried to flee, but neighbors caught him. They also shifted the woman’s body to the morgue for autopsy and registered a murder case against the suspect.

Naila, 22, was an art student living in Baghbanpura. She had a dream to be a top painter of the world. The parents of Naila, 22, had refused to give her hand to her cousin Amanat which led to unrest among the two families. She was at home when her cousin Amanat called her to near restaurant and shot her. She was taken to the hospital but she died.

Farzana, 28, a resident of Barkat Town, had got married with Rahim 10 years back but her husband died soon after marriage. Her parents married her off again with another man but they divorced. Meanwhile, Farzana allegedly developed relations with Asif, a resident of the same town, who asked her to marry him but she refused to accept his proposal.

On the night, Asif visited Farzana at her house and they again had an argument over the marriage issue. At this, Asif opened fire at her and she died on the spot. The suspect fled the scene after committing the crime.

Cases of violence against women in Punjab have increased by 12 percent, according to Punjab Commission on the Status of Women report. The Punjab Gender Parity Report 2017 states that about 7,313 cases of violence against women (VAW) were reported in 2016, as compared to 6,5050 cases in 2015 and 5,967 in 2014.

“A percentage increase of 12.4% in the last year in a continuation of the unfortunate trend observed over the past four years, with 2016 seeing the highest percentage increase in four years,” said the report.

Question is, Is it a civilized society? Are we civilized people? Are we HUMANS?
