Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) once again formed to gain the lost political fame. Two main players JUI(F) and JI have significant support in KPK. The impact of MMA will definitely affect the outcome of general elections 2018. However, the differences between the two major parties in religious and political issues will create hurdles in the alliance.

The 9/11 event played a key role in the success of MMA in 2002 elections. The impact was mainly felt in KPK and Balochistan, where local Mullahs defeated strong political figures. The success of MMA was in fact, the anti-American wave in general public. The symbol of holy book was used for religious sympathy and students of Madaris were brought under the supervision of Mullahs to the jalsas of MMA.

In five years of MMA government (2002-2007), religious parties failed to deliver in KPK due to enter-political differences. The rise of Pakistani Taliban in some areas of KP occurred with the support of MMA government. Hence, the alliance ended up in a disaster. JI boycotted 2008 elections, whereas JUI remained active in the process of the electoral field.

In 2013, JI and JUI fought the election under the supervision of Siraj-ul-Haq and Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman, separately. Both failed to gain the majority in any province including KP. JI made the alliance with PTI in KP, while JUI with PML(N) in the federal government. In those five years, the stance of PTI chief Imran Khan was on the clear stance against hypocritical elements of JUI, while sitting next to JI in government.

Conclusion

Both JI and JUI sacrificed of the ideology of Islamic stance over the alliances with non-religious parties for the lust of government. The contradiction over the issue of integration of FATA with KP and the rise of Tehreek-i-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) will deeply hurt MMA in KPK and Punjab, respectively. However, the religious elements still exist throughout Pakistan and will let MMA to re-evolve, but mainly in KP.
