In the dark ages, and years later, the only hope for a better tomorrow is education. If you are educated enough, you have all the assets that those 22.6 million children in Pakistan are deprived of, RIGHT? WRONG. Without any doubt, education is a right, it is a necessity which gives you the true sense of existence, and it is what makes a human who he really is. Remember the dark times where girls were buried alive? And those where basic rights were far beyond human imagination?

These are all the reflections from the past which on their own, speak about the importance of education in a person’s life. While there are billions in the world who are waiting for us, the ‘educated individuals’ to come forward and help them get access to basic education, we, the so-called ‘Educated individuals’ are running in a marathon of ‘who is competent enough’.

Now what I am about to talk about does not include people who don’t even try and later complain about their results, which they claim are ‘disappointing’ and find an easy way out to shut the mouths of people with their rants; stop fooling yourself and others, period. The harsher reality is, if you DON’T study enough, and THEN you don’t get marks you desired for, this is exactly what you have been working for!

But, my point here is something else: there are 2 types of people in the world, those who don’t study at all and those who work their butt off in hope of the better results. For those who get ‘flying chappals’ for not even trying, I am sorry but you need to get serious about your goals in life, if there are any.. but for those, who get criticized, who are mock down, who are mentally challenged and are told they are useless; do we ever realize what our words and actions make them go through?

Going back to the primary purpose of education: to transfer knowledge and NOT DESTRUCTIVE COMPETITION. Yes, the competition, of course, is important but destructive competition which causes depression, complex, and demotivation is threatening. It can, in fact, discourage a person from pursuing his/her dream and in many cases, result in harmful addictions like that of drugs and suicides.

While many of us acknowledge all these facts, but the irony is, we are still causing mental stress for people around us. We mock them down because maybe, for example, they are slow learners or they are not as good in studies as we are and with our words and gestures when eventually these individuals lose their hopes or give up, we criticize them and our social setting.

What we need to realize is, our words and actions can be the reason behind why MANY people around us give up or lose their hopes! We need to acknowledge the fact that the level of intelligence and the ability to perform vary from a person to other. A person who is not as good as we are in studies might have exceptional expertise in other walks of life, or might ends up with a better job and pay later in their life. How can we decide or measure a person’s success and competence just by the initial stages of his life of which education is important but in the end, JUST A PART?

We all, you and I, need to assess our own selves: is discouragement and mocking others down just because we are better than them makes us educated? Is this the reason why our parents decided to educate us and bear all the expenses by sacrificing their dreams? If yes, then today we all have one reason why those 22.6 people in Pakistan and billions in the world are in the far better and ethically educated than us because at least, they are not a threat to the wellbeing of our society.
