During the war of independence 1857, the Muslims were killed mercilessly and their belongings were looted. They were put into prisons. The mosques and schools were closed for them, contrary the Hindus have shown their hypocrisy by coordinating with the British troops. After this war, British gained power over all India and they suppressed the voice of Muslims.

Then an angel emerged in the form of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan and he put Muslims out of those critical situations by making educational institutions for the Indian Muslims and created understandings between the Indian Muslims and the Indian government of that time. He founded Aligarh College for the Muslims of the subcontinent and later various colleges like Islamia College Lahore, Islamia College Peshawar, and Haleem College Kawnpur were founded.

Sir Syed recruited Hindu teachers and allowed Hindu students to take admission in those institutions. That is how Hindi-Urdu controversy emerged. Hindus started a campaign to make Hindi the language of administration against Urdu, in 1867. This controversy led Sir Syed Ahmed Khan to change his mind on the basis of “Two Nation Theory”.

But Muslims later knew the hypocrisy of Hindus and they decided to form All India Muslim league in 1906 and one of the major reason for its formation was the Urdu-Hindi controversy. The Hindus strived hard to replace the official language Urdu by Hindi. They were also favoring Devanagari script in place of Arabic or Persian script. The Hindus considered Hindi as a better language than Urdu and they always thought of replacing Urdu by Hindi on all possible levels.
