Punjab police has been the center of attention for the last 5 years. Ever since the PML-N came into power 5 years ago, the country has scrutinized policemen in Punjab and the standards they have to offer. While their uniforms have changed, things still seem pretty old-school.

Torture cells in Pakistan have always been denounced by senior practitioners, including heads of LEAs, politicians and even journalists. However, from time to time, reports of private and institutionalized torture cells erupt from the blue. A young boy has allegedly been raped and filmed by members of Punjab police at a private torture cell near Sher Kot, Lahore.

As per the FIR lodged, an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) named Muhammad Imran lured a young boy into his trap, taking him to a private torture cell in Sher Kot. After reaching, the boy was asked to strip naked and Muhammad Imran demanded sexual favors in return. When the boy, flabbergasted, refused, he was sexually assaulted by the ASI and filmed in the process.

The ASI also threatened the young boy, warning him of not telling anybody about the incident, or he would be killed in a fake encounter. The ASI then filmed him while another police personnel named Shafaqat sexually assaulted the young boy. From the private torture cell, the boy was taken to the police station and locked up. An FIR was lodged against the boy for ‘stealing motorcycles’. The boy was warned for dire consequences he would have to face if he told the truth to anyone.

When the boy’s parents reached the police station, it was a matter of moments before they got to know what had happened to their son. However, even after the boy narrated the whole ordeal, the SHO refused to take action against his sub-ordinate Imran. Instead of being locked up, he now serves the SHO in his private protocol, while the other abuser, Shafaqat was helped in escaping town.

This is not the first incident where police has created an atmosphere like this for the general public. For decades, animals wearing the police uniform have abused, raped and murdered people for not letting them have things their way. After Naqeebullah Mehsud’s tragic fake encounter, Pakistan has had enough of such charades.

Here’s to hoping that the future of Pakistan would not look as bleak as it is now. Here’s to hoping that Pakistani police, regardless of which province it is from, will learn that there lies a huge burden on its shoulders of protecting and helping the general public.
