In Pakistan, there are numerous incidents that mainstream media does not pick up but still reaches the masses through social media. The power of social media in today’s day is not unknown to anyone.
Through different formats on social media, vices that occur in the rural belts of different provinces have been highlighted and acted upon. Recently, Pakistani news agency INP reported a heinous incident that took place in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
As reported, a young teenage girl was picked up, stripped and paraded in front of the whole village by influential people of the area. Apparently, the girl became a scapegoat between two tribes who were at daggers drawn. The incident took place in the vicinity of the Chodwan Police Station.
The scared and scarred girl was paraded naked through streets for over an hour. The poor soul kept knocking door to door, for help and clothes, but nobody dared open their doors or helped her due to the fear of the goons.
After the incident, the girl’s family went to the police station but the local police did not register an FIR against the culprits involved. However, after the incident sparked fire on social media, five people have been named in the launched FIR.
Incidents like these remind us that the writ of law is not being implemented in the rural areas of the country, regardless of the province. Influential people and potential bandits keep the local police under their feet and resort to heinous activities that please them, without any guilt.
