A few days ago, a very shocking new hit the students and faculty of IoBM, our beloved, the founder of the Institute of Business Management passed away. Shahjehan Karim did something no other educationist could have done, i.e bring a university from null to top 5 in just 20 years, which is a very short span of time. Even universities on the top positions took 60 years to reach there.

Born in Patna, India. He received his higher education from Aligarh University, from where he went to the University of Arizona, to get his post-graduate degree in Political Sciences. He also studied Public Administration at Cambridge University and Transportation Management at the University of British Columbia.

Coming back to Pakistan, he appeared for the CSS exams, then joining the Civil Services of Pakistan in 1957 and worked over there for 37 years. He also worked the United Nations Organization as an International Civil Servant for 10 years and had held a number of senior positions with the Government of Sindh and Pakistan, including Federal Secretary Information and Chairman of Pakistan Television and of Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation (PBC). He was a fellow of the Economic Development Institute of the World Bank.

He served a pioneering role in the education sector and believed in the promotion of higher education for making Pakistan a developed and prosperous country, which he did through establishing the Institute of Business Management, Karachi. In a developing economy like Pakistan, entrepreneurs are of great worth, and are necessary, he understood that and focused on generating entrepreneurs through his institution.

He not only established IoBM but donated his last savings to the Institution Scholarship Fund. We have lost a great Educationalist, a fine human being, and a devoted Civil Servant. There are so many things to be written about him and his contributions. The above are just a few thoughts.

May Allah bless him the soul, and may he rest in peace. Amen.
