The police services of Pakistan, over the years, have earned an absolutely appalling name for themselves, unlike the other security agencies of the country. The reason? Many say it’s the low salaries and degrading attitude of the higher-ups that force the un-ranked police officers to con the common man.
Every now and then, social media comes across an incident where somewhere in the country, ‘police gardi’ is running rampant, harassing the innocent population. Another such incident has taken place in Punjab, where police officials did not only harass a brother and sister but also humiliated them, beating and abusing them publicly.
In a viral video, officials of the Punjab police could be seen beating and abusing siblings of the locality, who were doing nothing wrong but trying to live their lives according to the protocols set by society, where a brother has to accompany her sister everywhere she goes, for ‘security’ purposes.
These particular siblings were on their way following an everyday routine, where the brother dropped his sister off at her tuition classes. While they were on their way, the siblings were stopped by police and interrogated as to who they were.
Even though the boy clearly told the police that it was his sister that was accompanying him, the police officials slapped and beat him, showering immoral abuses against him and her sister. All this, while the public stood there and watched, even filmed the incident, but did not try to intervene and help clear the issue.
The police took this as an opportunity and abused his sister in front of the boy, who kept pleading that it was his sister and not his girlfriend. He even asked people to not gather around and enjoy his degradation, adding insult to injury.
The siblings were then collected from the location and taken to the local police station on charges of ‘adultery’, while from the initial moments, the boy on camera, kept screaming that it was his sister, his real sister.
