There was a time, not too long ago, when the judiciary under the trigger-happy Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry would issue Suo Motu notices on the flimsiest of excuses. You loosen your tongue against any judge or the court and be prepared for the consequences.

Times have changed, however. Or has our judiciary become troublingly tolerant, especially when it comes to the outbursts of the former prime minister against the Supreme Court and it is five honorable judges who delivered their historic verdict against Nawaz Sharif’s disqualification?

According to some analysts, the anti-judiciary and anti-army approach the ousted prime minister has taken will help him muster the sympathy and support of his workers while undermining the credibility of the Supreme Court. And going by the crowd of supporters the PML-N has managed to take out, it can be safely assumed that the party, or its die-hard workers, are least affected by the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif. “Our leader and Prime Minister is still Nawaz Sharif,” said a roaring crowd of his supporters.

Some political commentators have hinted that the former prime minister’s covert criticism of the judiciary may land him and his party in serious trouble and that he should not take the apex court’s lenience for granted.

However, the common man, who has been observing the tone and tenor of Nawaz Sharif against the judiciary following his disqualification, is unable to understand the Supreme Court’s quiet over its censure. The apex court ought to take note of the situation and issue a contempt of court notice to the former prime minister for his rants against the learned and honorable judges.
