Ever since I started my university life in Yusra Medical College, I had been constantly whining, complaining and making a fuss about everything, I’d go on and on about how much I had to study every single day to survive, or how my life got so much tougher than ever before. However, my unripe grumpy attitude immediately changed ever since the rumors started reverberating and echoing in hostel corridors and university classrooms.
“THEY’RE GOING TO SHUT OUR COLLEGE DOWN” That’s when I realized Yusra is like a home to me. The very thought of this name disappearing in the field of medicine and all of us, every single student dispersing into other medical colleges in groups or twos and threes sent shivers down my spine. This bad news has taken a toll on all of us, there is this never-ending tenseness, anxiety, and grief which every single student is facing. This decision has been made when the proof is just around the corner. Students are already stressed and this is nothing more than a mental torture. Deep within, we all know we don’t deserve this.
Here, I would just like to mention a little bit about the college! Foundation of YUSRA medical college was laid by Brigadier Sultan and Brigadier Sikander in 2009. These two gentlemen had spent days and nights working tireless hours to bring the dream of YUSRA to reality. YUSRA has improved tremendously in the previous 9 years. We’ve acquired our very own state of the art building in Islamabad which is more spacious than most of the medical colleges in Islamabad. Our college is known for its quality education and best academics along with all other necessary healthy activities.
YUSRA has produced toppers in all 5 professional examinations among all the other 4 colleges under SZABMU. We have excellent faculty, well-equipped lecture halls, laboratories, and dissection halls. Here I’m attaching a few pictures of the campus, one of the 4 dissection halls and lecture hall. YUSRA has some deficiencies that I’m sure can be rectified and vanquished over time, closing it down and putting the future of so many students at risk is not going to take anyone anywhere. We have our own hospital which I agree has some drawbacks.
The number of beds in our hospital falls short of the standard set by PMDC. To rectify this issue, the college has acquired beds in Quaid e Azam international and Pakistan International Hospital. There could be some more issues with college but shutting down a well reputable institution is NOT THE ONLY SOLUTION!
No one is thinking about 300+ workers who are the sole bread earners of the family, 200+ brilliant faculty members. No one seems to care about 500 students and their future. No one is even thinking about the embarrassment our Alumni will have to face if college shuts down, No one is thinking about the fortunes our parents have spent for getting us quality education.
YUSRA should be given at least 3 to 6 months for overcoming its deficiencies before just closing it down. We request the Chief Justice of Pakistan and Prime Minister to take this matter into serious consideration. We, the Students of Yusra Medical College, don’t want to be accommodated in other colleges, we want YUSRA and we stand with our college.
On the contrary, we understand that college is deficient in a few things but everyone starts small and there’s has been a tremendous improvement. YUSRA should be given some time at least 6 months to overcome the deficiencies and even then if the college fails to meet the PMDC standards, we will respect the decision of the honorable court and will get accommodated wherever PMDC wants to accommodate on the fair basis.
