It seems like the Mutahida Qaumi Movement in Pakistan will never really go out of the limelight. From the times of Altaf Hussain’s fascist speeches to newfound charades, the MQM forever lives alive in Karachi’s political scenario.

The other day, MQM Pakistan and Pak-Sarzameen Party (PSP) did an open press conference from the country’s metropolitan city where they decided to form an alliance for the betterment of Karachi and its Mahajir community.

The shady alliance was confirmed by both party leaders to the general public around 10 pm and the rest of the night saw social media erupt in the worst possible way. Student and social wings of the MQM, on social media, subjected Farooq Sattar and MQM-P’s decision of an alliance with PSP to harsh criticism.

As per the youth wings, Farooq Sattar was out to ‘sell’ the souls of Mahajirs and that Mustafa Kamal and his party were anti-Mahajir, not in their support. Some seasoned supporters and veteran politicians, however, supported the decision of an alliance for the 2018 elections.

The immense hate for Farooq Sattar and the potential alliance saw MQM-P take a U-TURN the next day. Farooq Sattar held a public press conference where he shunned any chances of an alliance with PSP and stated that if the party members and supporters had their reservations, he would never go against their wishes.

The funniest part was when Farooq Sattar tried to plead his innocence against corruption allegations stating that he owned a Landcruiser worth Rs. 90 lakhs, but it actually cost him just Rs. 17 Lakhs, as the rest of the modifications and the remaining price of the vehicle, was paid by his friends.

It now seems that the most popular step any political party in Pakistan can take is a U-TURN. Instead of a clear manifesto and great policies, supporters of political parties are now impressed with whoever takes the biggest turn, contradicting everything they did or do. With both parties now playing the ‘Mahajir’ card, people of the community have been left utterly confused as to who is wrong and who is right.
