People being victims of hate all over the world is something that every media platform needs to rectify and report. How many times have random people been victimized by hate, not get any coverage and justice? Well, mostly because it gets unnoticed and goes without anyone having to talk about it.

Mariam Moustafa, who was an engineering student was allegedly assaulted by a group of women in Nottingham, UK. On 3 February, after the assault, she was left in a coma and died on 14th of March, 2018 from severe injuries. She was brutally punched and kicked on the Parliament Street, Nottingham. According to The Guardian, she was aboard on a bus when the incident happened but she was being followed before by the group of women who were abusive to her and even threatened her. Mariam was taken to Queen’s Medical Center after the incident took place and was later transferred to Nottingham City Hospital where she was being treated until she died on 14th of March.

Mariam and her sister Malak were attacked on the bus but there seem to have no CCTV footage and their father said:

“I want justice for my daughter, not just my daughter but also so this doesn’t happen to another girl or another boy.”

The family was of Egyptian nationality and the incident has caused many waves of news all around Egypt. The country’s embassy called on those who bring justice to the girl and her family. But the Nottingham police said there seems no evidence that Mariam’s death was caused by “Hate Crime”

But after this was reported in The Guardian, people are coming up with news all over the internet and someone on Facebook wrote a post.

Here’s what people said after the assault news was posted on several news channels differently:

“This is a hate Islamophobic murder crime

This #BBC headline is just not strong enough, Muslim student terrorised by hate mob is now dead!

This is a hate islamophobic murder crime.

18 YEAR OLD EGYPTIAN STUDENT, MARIAM MOUSTAFA WAS ATTACKED IN NOTTINGHAM BY 10 BRITISH ISLAMOPHPBICS OF AFRICAN DESCENT OVER A WEEK AGO.

She suffered a stroke, bleeding in her brain, bleeding in her lungs, and was in a coma for weeks.

The hospital has been negligent in taking proper care of her and authorities have been negligent in pursuing the girls.

MARIAM PASSED AWAY TODAY AND NOBODY IS SPEAKING ABOUT IT.

انا لله وانا اليه راجعون

Please pray for her and her family.

Imagine the scenario and the outrage results if this had been a European student attacked in Egypt, and a European family who’s hearts were breaking, and Egyptian doctors who were the ones mishandling her treatment.

Imagine if this was a white teenager dying at the hands of a group of Muslim attackers,

Do you suppose this would be missed in the media like the case of the Muslim 18 year old MARIAM from Egypt studying in UK

Spread this and let the world know.”

The above facebook post seems to have accused BBC of not mentioning the name, ethnicity or any information that may have lead people to know who the girl was.

The BBC headlines read as: “Teenager dies after city center assault” and the coverage was very bland to give anyone any piece of information. They simply reported the crime as someone died few weeks after being attacked at Nottingham.

This scenario takes people back to the debate that is media biased to the innocent and is protecting the superior and in power, which also makes people question that, will media ever be transparent? Media can be a greater source to get the innocents justice by giving them maximum coverage. May we get to see the culprits of Mariam behind the bars.
