In September 2017, another innocent girl was the victim of a revenge acid attack, after her own fiance disfigured her face, eyes, and torso. Ever since the incident, social media had been demanding for justice for Beenish, which has finally been served!

24-year-old Beenish was returning from work when she was stopped by her own fiance, who threw acid on her face, ruining her life for good. Asmat Ullah and his friend were on a bike when they attacked Beenish and fled the scene.

The reason for the acid attack was that Beenish did not want to marry Asmat Ullah and had rejected his marriage proposal after their engagement. Asmat took this as casus-belli and made sure that Beenish paid a huge price for rejecting him.

Police had filed an FIR against the culprits and they were soon arrested. After formal proceedings at a session court, Asmat Ullah has been sentenced to prison for 60 years (two charges of 25 years and a single charge of 10 years), along with a monetary fine of Rs. 40 lakhs! Even though all this cannot bring Beenish’s life back on track, it would serve as decent compensation for the crime committed against her.

Acid attacks in Pakistan are nothing new. Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy was able to bag an Oscar Award for her documentary on the same subject called Saving Faces: The Price of Forgiveness. In Pakistan, it is generally thought as a taboo act of courage for disfiguring a woman’s face with acid if rejection is brought upon the man.

The anti-terrorism court made sure that Asmat’s sentence was so harsh that people who even think about committing such inhumane acts think a thousand times before they pull it off. The incident not only ruined Beenish’s life but ended any prospect of happiness for Asmat as well, who in a fit of anger, made a huge mistake.

Even though no monetary compensation can bring Beenish’s face and her damaged eyes back, let it be a lesson for people who think of revenge crimes as a source of relieving their personal pain and hate. Acid is not meant to be thrown on people, nor is the country’s justice system dead yet. Kudos to the court for performing their duty diligently.
