The writ of law — a term that over the years has lost its essences entirely, when it comes to Pakistan. Different pillars of the state are locked in a contest of power with the judiciary running most rampant among others.

It was the judiciary that forcefully abdicated former Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif from his office and it is the same department that is now coming under scrutiny for supporting him unconditionally.

Outside the Accountability Court in Islamabad, pro-government lawyers rallied to the support of Nawaz Sharif’s daughter and his son-in-law who were summoned by the NAB court. In the whole charade that went vile, a violent lawyer out of the blue slapped an elite police officer across his face.

This footage was caught on camera and became the epitome of today’s incident. It is not the first time that lawyers have shown a high hand approach towards other branches of the state which includes police.

To slap an elite police force officer on duty across his face is unacceptable and against the law. Here, the teachers have become students. The show of power from the lawyers has forced their own peers to denounce their actions. The upholders of law have taken it into their own hands and are now abusing it.

The issue arose when police did not let the lawyers go inside the Accountability Court when the lawyers had orders that clearly stated that they could go inside. The violence was evident from both sides as a lawyer was struck on his head as well, which led to instant bleeding.

The constantly violent rhythm Pakistani lawyers have been in for the last decade is nothing short of alarming, but nobody dare raises any questions. It seems that every pillar of the state is strengthening itself, other than the legislature, which for any democracy is absolutely alarming.
