In a world like today’s, ‘justice’ is merely a word that doesn’t hold up to its true essence in our society. Justice is not only applicable to complicated situations such as cases of law and order; Justice is also a concept which is to be practiced in all areas of our life, may incidents be ‘big’ or ‘small’. Islam is a guiding lifestyle with rules and ideologies that put our entire life into clear perspective. The essential concept of justice is clearly stated in the Quran that evidently carves our path as Muslims to utmost righteousness.

There are multiple times when we have to make the choice between what is right and what is wrong; in our minds, we may be able to reach a conclusion, however, the thought of voicing and acting upon what our conscience knows to be right is what causes hesitation due to reasons aforementioned.

To resolve the conflict whether or not one should voice themselves and act upon injustice, it is vital to state that the first belief one must adhere to in Islam is monotheism, the Oneness of Allah and the second essential belief is to practice justice. Therefore, the foundation of Islam after monotheism is justice and as a Muslim, if we hold back in standing up for what is ‘right’, our faith is questionable in front of Allah.

Allah knows His creation best, He is aware of the two main reasons why His beings would deviate from the path of justice; the first reason is an individual’s personal interest and the love for their family and friends. To resolve this inner conflict that an individual experience, Allah has given the guidelines of how to overcome the uneasiness of social pressure and walk on the straight path of justice;

“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not personal inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort your testimony or refuse to give it, then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.” Holy Quran [4:135]

The second reason why an individual would deviate from the path of justice is that of the troubles they would have to face by a particular individual or a group of people if they choose to voice themselves, stand up for and do what is ‘right’. Allah once again in his Holy book has stated the solution for such an inner conflict an individual will experiences;

“O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.” Holy Quran [5:8]

Evidently, Allah has urged His beings to be courageous and voice themselves against what is ‘wrong’ and stand up for what is ‘right’. Once you choose to follow the straight path and will be guided by Allah, never tire of the journey you have chosen to set out to. The journey of adhering to Justice is never, will never and has never been easy; however, putting your hope in Allah’s Justice to make you succeed in following His command to always choose the ‘right’ path, will never have you at a loss.

Find your courage in your faith; be just, and become the hope the world needs.
