For quite a while, honor killings had left the peripheral of Pakistan. Ever since Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy came out with her documentary ‘A Girl in the River’ which one an Oscar, just as her other documentary on acid-attacks.

Tragically, honor killing has returned to Pakistan. A young man shot his uncle to death, while injuring his aunt seriously in a bid to save his family’s honor. The man had gone to Karachi just to kill the couple, all the way from Balochistan.

As reported by the police, the SHO Manghopir, the young man traveled all the way from Balochistan to Karachi to take the couple’s lives. The couple, Rozi Khan and Zainab, had eloped into a free-will marriage, which was denounced by their families. Only Zainab’s mother and one of her brothers had given consent of her marriage with Rozi Khan, the rest, remained opposed.

The girl belonged to the Marri tribe from Balochistan, a clan which takes immense pride in its name and traditions. One thing they are very famous for with the locals is honor killing. On Tuesday night, the young man entered his aunt’s house and opened fire, shooting her husband Rozi Khan in the head.

He would’ve shot his aunt to death too, but luckily his pistol malfunctioned and he had to resort to other prospects. Along with him were 4 other men who helped him commit the foul act. The men later beat Zainab with sticks and stabbed her multiple times before leaving their apartment. Zainab sustained critical injuries, but survived and is now admitted in the Abbassi Shaheed Hospital in Karachi.

However, justice wasn’t far away because Zainab had put up resistance against her nephew, injuring him in the prospect. The man then went to a  private hospital in Gulshan-e-Maymar, where he tried to put up a fake alibi for his treatment. The police acted in time on a tip, raided the hospital and arrested the man who killed Zainab’s husband.

As per Dawn, Six people, including Zainab’s nephew, have been nominated in the first information report (FIR) lodged at the Manghopir police station with Rozi’s brother, Mangal Khan, as the complainant.

Honor killings, for long, had stayed away from Pakistan and its people. After the Women’s Protection Bill, the government rallied a serious crackdown on attempts of honor killing as well. Sadly, not all men and tribes in the country give leverage to women to marry with their own will.
