Last night, when coming back from a stationary shop, I met a guy once very famous for his exceptional footballing talent. He formerly played for a well-reputed football club located in my neighborhood. I adore both of them, the guy himself and the club he used to play for.

Since football is the game I have infinite love for, I was delighted to see him after a long time and we met each other with broad smiles on our faces. During this small meeting, what concerned me the most was the advice he gave me. It was truly saddening to hear those words from him when recalling him as an advocate for football at the same time.

He advised me that, “Play football with a passion but don’t strive to make it your profession”. He further gave me an example of himself, he added, “Look at us, we have destroyed our lives running after it. We regret it”

Not just after listening to those statements, but whenever I observe the same situation around me, I feel disturbed. Football is not something new for the youth, in fact, it’s getting rapidly popular. Previous generations have dedicated their lives to the beautiful game but even those devoted sacrifices didn’t provide the deserving outcome for the younger generation.

I personally know many football players who have been to the Gulf states, where they were offered professional contracts after their promising performances sought international attention. For a temporary period, they made their passion, their profession. Few of them elevated their careers through several opportunities eyeing a better prospect.

However, these cases are exceptional. It’s clear that in my country, there’s no future for football. PFF (PAKISTAN FOOTBALL FEDERATION) despite bagging the annual bonus from FIFA and government of Pakistan, doesn’t invest it with the aim of football development. Regardless of the negligence shown by the higher authorities, there are hundreds of clubs actively participating in the game all over the city of lights. Pakistan currently is home to an almost equal number of operating football clubs as the current world champion, Germany.

What would have been the outcome if we had a professional league to function as a platform for promising young talent as well as a determinant of the footballing standard we have? Resulting in the clear picture of Pakistani football, showing us the areas where we lack and to experiment the possible remedies for them.

On the other hand, we hardly have few grounds providing a suitable place to play the game.
