The queue outside the store got longer and longer. With sweaty beads glistening on their foreheads, everyone restlessly shifted their weight from one leg to another. The scorching heat grew mercilessly along with the queue. A sale; the rumor spread. Uncertain of the details; I jumped on the bandwagon too. Because it seemed #trending as they call it.
Sometimes, going with the flow seems so tempting. You want to be counted in the crowd. You want to be amongst those who make the majority. Become a part of what’s going on. Because standing out means you are left out. It shows you have nothing exciting going on in your life. Maybe you are boring. Maybe you are extremely introvert. Or mostly, maybe you have a zero social circle.
However, sometimes it is about following your own time zone. The timeline that defines you. That defines your personality. That defines the situation of events that will/are taking place in your life. It is never about choosing Science over Accounts just because your classmates are doing so. It is not about choosing a career path just because your friends are choosing it. It is not about shifting abroad just because everyone else does and post beautiful pictures.
It is not about doing a particular job just because your batch-mates have landed there. It is not about getting married because people your age are tying the knot. It is not about having kids because every married couple is having one. It is not about wearing a hijab/fashion just because it has become a new trend-setting statement. It is not about getting a particular set of luxury just because people from your social circle can afford one.
Sometimes, it is never about following your own age group cousins. Sometimes, it is not about your friends. Sometimes, it is not about your family. Sometimes, it is not about the society and the people who make it. Sometimes, it is just about YOU. Your OWN timeline. Your OWN time zone. Where YOU, yourself define what YOU want.
Where things like ‘because everyone is doing so’, ‘because it’s a trend’ or ‘because everyone is following’ stop bothering you anymore. Where you discover yourself. Where you realize that YOU are the most important person for your own self. For owning up your life. For controlling what’s going on. Where #Trendsetter is beyond #Trending and makes you enjoy the comfort of your OWN time zone.
