What was to be the 72ndsession of the United Nations General Assembly, has turned out to be more or less of an argument at the dinner table for India and Pakistan. This sort of behavior may be the reason why for so long, nothing has been done to correct the idiocies in both the developing countries.

The blame game ensues: Following US President Trump’s accusations of Pakistan being a “safe haven for terrorist organizations”, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi responded by refuting the claim and even called out to India for its dehumanizing attacks in Kashmir.

New anti-Indian sentiment has been triggered in Pakistan as a result of President Trump’s comments that Pakistan needs to “demonstrate that it is committed to civilization”, which to the layperson’s ear is the same as calling a country ‘barbaric’, immediately followed by him asking for India’s help in Afghanistan.

Pakistan’s reply to these allegations was strong and overwhelmed at the same time as it went on to mention India’s frequent violation of the Line of Control in Kashmir in a standard ‘but look what he did to me’ move. India meanwhile maintains that Kashmir is a part of India.

Name-calling: Abbasi’s statement sparked an outburst in India, who used its right of response to call Pakistan “Terroristan” among other things. This was followed by a formal address by Sushma Swaraj later on, where she blatantly pointed out that Pakistan exports terror to other countries, which was then again responded to by Maleeha Lodhi from Pakistan, accusing India of promoting terrorism.

What is clear from these sets of offenses and defenses is that a clear solution is nowhere in the line of vision. What has always held back both India and Pakistan from progressing as mutual promoters of development and solidarity, continues to hold them back forever more.

The UN General Assembly’s vibe of bringing peace and ensuring better relations between countries, and staying true to its name ‘United Nations’ was besmirched with the heated and prolonged argument between two nations born from the same soil, raising the same people, and following the same principles.

Today I call myself a citizen of Pakistan. Perhaps yesterday, I was a citizen of Hindustan. Who is to determine whichever one is the better nation? Not us, and not today, when both nations sit at the family dinner table, squabbling with each other like estranged siblings.
