Once an Arab asked a Jew: “Why is this that you people always plot against the Muslims?”. The Jew cackled and answered: “My dear friend, with the presence of Muslims like you, there is no need for us to plot against Islam.” He further exclaimed,” the way Muslims themselves have damaged the image of Islam, all the disbelievers collectively could not do it.” The actual peril to Islam is not the disbelievers but Muslims themselves.

Coming towards the current situation of “democracy” in Pakistan, we must admit that the amount of damage all the non-political actors have collectively done to the politics of Pakistan is significantly less than the damage caused by the political actors or the politicians to democracy in Pakistan.

Rather than non-democratic powers, democracy has suffered more at the hands of “democratic leaders.” The degree of harm caused to the constitution of Pakistan collectively by four martial laws, when compared to the harm caused by the lawmakers, seems rather petty. Let us take some examples of some prominent political parties and politicians of Pakistan.

Although two powerful military dictators and two civilian governments tried to forcibly suppress his vision and agenda, yet the PPP survived. However, coming towards the present day, the PPP has reached its death bed due to the ill actions its own leaders and family.

PML-N survived thrice the attacks on itself carried by different institutions of state; unfortunately, today, it is reaching its end by the hands of its own leader.

Democracy has been strangled in this country four times, yet it has survived. Sadly, democracy today is dying due to deeds of its own advocates and its own self-proclaimed champions.

It is a fact that whether they are institutions, whether they are humans or whether they are political parties, they can’t survive if under attack by their own founders or guardians. The way it’s under siege due its own guardians and pioneers, I fear democracy won’t survive for a long time.”May God help this country.”
