The rape and murder of 8-year-old Asifa Bano in Jammu & Kashmir has gripped India into a wave of violence and protests. You’d think that these protests are anti-rape and rapists, that the general public is protesting for the little girl, but you’re wrong.

The Kathua rape case, as it has comer a to be known, showcases the most sinister acts of humanity for personal purposes. Even though some Hindu extremists decided to support the rapists, there are some sane voices left in the country as well.

One Hindutva leader, Deepak Sharma, spoke out in favor of Asifa and her lawyer. The man clad in a typical Sanghatan orange kameez, with rings and bands on his hands, shocked everyone when he actually made sense and spoke the truth, instead of jumping on the jingoistic bandwagon that supports Asifa’s rapists.

“We Hindus talk about unity, we talk about Sanghatan, but how can we do it when we act like this? We are making our society one of rapists,” said the man. “Just to speak against Muslims, we are now defending the rape of an 8-year-old girl? Is this Hindutva? Is this what we’ve been taught?”

“Is this Hinduism? We blame the Muslims for everything that we do. The Muslims are fighting for their daughters, what are we doing? We say that Muslims do not treat their daughters right, but what are they doing and what are we doing? It’s the complete opposite. Instead of fighting for that little girl, we are speaking against her? It’s shocking!,” he concluded.

On 17th January, locals found an 8-year-old girl, raped and murdered. Her body was full of bruises, found in a forest.  “I knew something horrible had happened to my girl,” Mr Pujwala, Asifa’s 52-year-old father said. Pujwala belongs to a community of Muslim nomadic shepherds called Gujjars who graze their cattle in the Himalayas.

8-year-old Asifa had gone to the forest to collect her family horses. The horses came home, but sadly, Asifa did not make it back. When the family started searching for Asifa and contacted the local Indian police, so disgusting was their behavior, that they said she must have ‘eloped’ with a man and run away. The police said this about an 8-year-old girl.

Many analysts believe that the Gujjars were mentally tormented with Asifa’s rape because of land, they wanted to grab free land which the shepherds used, and this is how they paved their revenge out.
