They say we should keep our enemies close and our ATM card even closer. Arguably, the most important thing in your wallet, your ATM card becomes the source of livelihood whenever you run out of cash.

Fresh reports suggest that there is a new mafia in Pakistan, who steal all your ATM card data after you use them at these altered ATM machines. The entrance provided for the card in an ATM machine is connected with a circuit of a sort that easily extracts all the data you have on your card.

Some even suggest that these altered machines, when used, deduct extra (large amounts of money), and when the owner leaves the ATM booths satisfied, the culprits who have set the circuit up come and collect their reward.

This is not the only theory that has come out. People are also suggesting that banks too are involved in this charade. The ATM machine that was caught in Islamabad belonged to Summit Bank. However, a credible bank like Summit would never be involved in petty affairs such as these. But it is also important to mention that these banks themselves should keep a check on their ATM machines.

It should be our own diligence to make sure we try and note if the ATM machine we’re using has been altered or not. It is also the bank’s responsibility to thoroughly clear and verify the originality of the ATM machine before putting it out for service.
