Pakistan’s foreign policy has been in doldrums for decades. The country hasn’t been able to establish itself as a foreign power when it comes to flawless diplomacy.

The former High Commissioner to New Delhi, Abdul Basit, who has been one of the strongest links of the Pakistani foreign policy and diplomacy, has made a statement regarding Pakistan’s Ambassador to the US that is making rounds on social media and news.

High Commissioner Abdul Basit labeled Ambassador Aizaz Chaudhry as the ‘worst foreign secretary’ in Pakistan’s history. And the reasons he has given seem to be nothing short of legit. In a letter written to Aizaz Chaudhry by Abdul Basit, the HC made it clear that Aizaz Chaudhry’s work was not up to the mark.

In the letter, Abdul Basit wrote: “The more I think the more I am convinced that you have been the worst Foreign Secretary ever. My concern is that you would also end up being the worst Pakistan Ambassador in Washington D.C. The reasons are simple. First, you are not made up for the delicate profession of diplomacy.

While I can cite many examples, the Ufa Joint Statement and Pakistan’s humiliating defeat at the Human Rights Council are sufficient to prove my point. Second and it is more worrisome, your heart is not in the right place. In this regard the less said the better.

I strongly feel that it is in Pakistan’s interest that you should immediately be removed from Washington D.C. If not so, you should not be given extension beyond your superannuation on 27 February 2018. May Allah help Pakistan when people like you with weak and dubious credentials are in such important positions. “

Abdul Basit presented two incidents as specific examples. First, the joint statement issued after a meeting in Ufa, the Russian city, between former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and India’s Narendra Modi in 2015, and Pakistan’s failure to get re-stated into the United Nations Human Rights Council. These two defeats presented a case that showed the failure of Pakistan’s incumbent US Ambassador.

Although Aizaz Chaudhry’s career as a foreign service officer spans 36 years of multilateral and bilateral experience, coming from Abdul Basit, the letter is being given immense importance as Basit handled affairs with India as High Commissioner for a long time. Abdul Basit joined the Foreign Service of Pakistan in 1982.
