Yesterday, Panama verdict was revealed by the Supreme Court of Pakistan around 11.30 am PST. As a consequence, Nawaz Sharif disqualified as Prime Minister as well as Ishaq Dar as Finance Minister of Pakistan. The top court successfully settled for the credibility of all charges against the former Prime Minister and his children.

The Panama verdict remained a highlight of yesterday. It is still one of the most trending topics in Pakistan. Not only Pakistan, it surged to a worldwide reach as Pakistan made history of removing an acting Prime Minister under corruption case. Now, all eyes turned towards the question as to who should be the new Prime Minister? Many speculations revealed names including Rana Sanaullah, Khwaja Asif, and Chaudhry Nisar as liable candidates. However, it was all based on conjectures.

According to many reports, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi will take over as caretaker Prime Minister. CM Shahbaz Shari’s name has also been highly speculated. However, the brother of the bygone PM will have to step down as Chief Minister of Punjab and be elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan first. It will require a member of Parliament, possibly a pro PML (N) to give up the seat to make way for Shahbaz Sharif.

But who is Shahid Khaqan Abbasi? Here’s everything you need to know about him:

He used to be the Chairman of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA)

He owns Air Blue

He has served as the Minister of Petroleum and National Resources during the Nawaz government

He has had a replete political career – serving as Minister of Commerce during 2008 PPP government as well

During the 1999 Pakistani coup d’etat by General (r) Pervez Musharaf, he was arrested and his tenure as Chairman of PIA had ended

It’s most likely that CM Shahbaz Sharif will take charge after the tenure of acting Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is over.
