“Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.” ― Kofi Annan

Globally, over 758 million adults cannot read and write even in today’s rapidly changing world. Believing that change begins at home, a few students from Beaconhouse College Campus Gulberg, Lahore initiated an adult literacy program under the name “Agaahi,” in order to help the support staff our their own school. What started as a vision of three students Neeha Hammad, Wahaj Tariq and Talha Shahzad, the idea enthralled many others who soon signed up to volunteer for the project.

The staff was divided into two groups on the basis of their previous qualifications to ensure effective learning. The students designed a curriculum for English, Mathematics, Urdu, as well as Computer Studies and began teaching the staff earlier in the summer vacations. Apart from primary level education, they also wanted to work on the staff’s personal grooming. Under the label of “Personal Enhancement,” the students arranged sessions to talk about important issues and also to encourage the staff’s creative thinking.

Such a project can be used for both; the staff and the volunteers. While the staff learns academically, the volunteers can benefit by inculcating in themselves a sense of social responsibility towards their community.

Initially, these students were afraid if the staff would show a positive response or not. However, once the project began, everyone looked forward to the next class with similar exhilaration. According to the volunteers, it not only helped develop a unique bond between the staff members and students but also left life-long memories.

The core team says that they would be happy to help anyone who wishes to initiate a similar project in their school. They also wish to start funding vocational training for the staff. To donate, give ideas or know more about what they do and how you can contact them via their Facebook page.
