Iran’s offer of investment and development in the Chabahar port provides vital and fruitful avenues of mutual cooperation which the concerned officials in Pakistan must ponder over carefully. Unfortunately, due to internal political instability and some external factors, the relations between Pakistan and its neighboring countries have deteriorated over the past few years.

Moreover, due to combined efforts of some countries, Pakistan has, to some extent, been “isolated” in the international community. Take the recent example of FATF meeting. Though not immediately, but Pakistan will once again be put on the financial grey list in the upcoming months. Decisions like these by the international intergovernmental institutions against Pakistan could significantly harm the case and image of Pakistan in the global community. However, it’s never too late.

The recent visit of Irani foreign minister has opened new channels which could best serve the interests of both the countries collectively. Economic cooperation among the countries is the o most significant prerequisite for a prosperous region. Reforming the banking sector, increasing investment and bilateral trade, and effective policing of the border posts are all the channels that have the capacity to produce win-win results.

Furthermore, linking the two “sister ports” of Gwadar and Chabahar can bring fruitful benefits and may subsequently lead to the economic and social development of the region.

It is now a fact that the world has become highly globalized with time.Interdependence of humans, businesses, organizations and, most importantly, countries are surging. Running merely after China won’t help. For being and becoming a developed and prosperous country and to see a prosperous and peaceful region, skillful and effective diplomacy must prevail now.

Our foreign policy must be guided by the desire and aspiration of making new allies and friends in the global community, and whole-hearted efforts and serious measures, not mere rhetorics, for improving ties with neighbors like Iran should be undertaken. Reservations and objections should only be removed by cooperation and trust building, not my reciprocal measures that are “pinching”.
