Pakistan is the top 3rd country with water issues. This recent statistics quite stirred the people and then lead to action by the Chief Justice of Pakistan to create open accounts for dams fund which was generously welcomed by government and non-government organizations.
I do promote charity by all means and the purpose of this post is not at all to discourage anyone from donating or anything. But let me ask a few questions. Isn’t this what we pay taxes for? Income tax, GST, value added tax, fuel adjustment charges, excise duty, customs duty, property tax, water tax, professional tax, I don’t even know names of all the taxes that we pay as a nation.
What is the purpose of those taxes if you have to create funds for collecting donations even for the basic necessities of the country. I’m not here for a political fiasco but this is not the first time that government figures are pulling this tactic. The call of the leader of political government for funds for hospital construction that too in his own name when his own party is caretaker of all the funds is either utter blindness on our end or proof of our corruption and stupidity as a nation. Words are not enough, neither are mere funds. A state only excels by not words but the actions of its leaders.
Shortage of funds is not a reason enough, give proper data sheets show the people how much of their taxes are being used in this dam that we so desperately and rightly need. The will be the end of corruption when I know the tax I paid from my hard earned money is also being used for me then I can give 10 rupees or 10,000 rupees knowing its not filling someone’s personal bank account.
Again! Don’t mistake my rant with me being against charity, but parallel charity for the mere sake of dams for which we are already paying does not justify itself. Knowing that we have huge cases of money embezzlement which can be collected to serve the nation when we all know that hundreds of industrialists are not even paying their taxes.
Even if you have the answer for every question above. Dear, Sir! Please inform my humble self when is this dam being built? What are the procedures being followed? Is any state institution going to look over it? And what about the corruption for these funds? Who is going to be answerable for this? Or we should wait for another case filed by NAB in another 20 years?
And lastly, to the poor people of my nation, who can’t recognize the same package with a different packing. Why are you not asking the right questions? If our elders were following corrupt leaders without questioning them, aren’t we doing the same? Blind star following is not needed. Ask why your funds are required for your needs because remember something, in this way you are creating a new income stream for leaders coming to forth. You have the right to ask, but ask the right questions.
