Yes, the sub-continent has a huge percentage of the youth wanting to become doctors, a profession that pays well and comes with a lot of perks, including a monumental respect in the eyes of the society.
One man from New Delhi, India, could not become a doctor unfortunately, but his sense of street-smartness fooled an Indian hospital into believing that he was a doctor who worked for them. This is the story of 19-year-old Adnan Khurram and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).
Adnan Khurram, a sharp young Muslim boy from India, worked at the AIIMS hospital in Delhi for 5 months. Even though he was not being paid by the hospital, there was no proof of his attachment to the workplace, he still managed to fool the administration and faculty for 150 days!
Adnan was finally caught at a seminar conducted by the hospital, where a lot of doctors and staff had gathered. Adnan might not look as old as a young doctor should, his skills and knowledge about the field were enough to fool his seniors and juniors as well. Khurram told seniors that he was a junior doctor and vice versa when it came to the juniors. With the hospital keeping a staff of over 800 individuals, being caught took some time.
He would help everyone out where needed and would also attend playgroups of 4 doctors easily. Whenever doctors sat down to talk, they say Khurram would participate actively and make sense about things, such was his knowledge of the field of medicine. After Khurram was arrested, he told the police that initially he had dressed as an impostor doctor to help a relative get quick treatment at the hospital.
Soon, he was hooked to the attraction of working at the hospital, which is why he decided to continue the gig. Even though Adnan was not paid a single penny in salary, he says that it increased his knowledge and will to work in the field.
