Amid the closing stage of chaos in the country, a very disconcerting incident of a couple’s slaughter took place in the city of lights. I really got shocked, but the reality is that this still happens in the 21st century, that too in Pakistan’s broad daylight.

The second thing that came to my mind was the place of incident. I really thought that the incident might have happened somewhere far away from any metropolis of the country, but to my surprise, the incident took place in Karachi. And the third thing that was unreservedly a more deplorable one was the time of the killing.

Newly married couple murdered in Karachi on orders of jirga

The Jirga gave the order to kill Abdul Hadi and Hussaini Bibi who married without taking permission from their parents. It really is unbelievable to even think of that. Their own parents became their killers. How atrocious and insane!

CM Sindh gave orders to IGP Sindh, for a probe into the matter and harsh punishments for culprits, accordingly. Again an action which served as too late. If the role of the government is set aside, the other stakeholders that are to be held responsible are the people who attend these Jirgas. Of course, this happens somewhere where the people live. In a number of recent mishaps, people proved to be on-lookers who are more interested in recording the incidents and spreading it over social media – the mishap of dishonoring a girl in DI Khan is the recent instance.

The dreadful thing is that the number of such cases is rising in Pakistan with the passage of time. Successive governments in the country have failed to curtail the number of brutal Jirgas.  In fact, the leaders are majorly accountable for this. How come people can call a Jirga and decide the fate of any person? Who has given them the authority to do so? I am sure neither the religion and nor the state.
