According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), broiler chicken has carcinogenic properties owing to the presence of arsenic in it. Carcinogenic is a term that denotes cancer, and arsenic is closely related to cancer-causing substances. Arsenic is an element having atomic number 33 it can be found in water, air or soil and is severely cancer causing. Thus, arsenic is present in the air it can also harm the one who inhales air in the presence of arsenic.

The broiler chicken is made after genetic modification with the use of arsenic drugs (roxarsone). Roxarsone drug helps chicken to grow faster and stronger, and it immensely increases the weight of a chicken; however, this drug changes into inorganic arsenic. As per the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), FDA scientists found that the levels of inorganic arsenic in the livers of chickens treated with 3-Nitro® were increased.

In Pakistan, chicken is one of the favourite foods that people consume almost every day. In addition to that, Pakistan, being a developing country has less hygienic filter facilities which intensify harmfulness of broiler chicken. Reportedly, many inject low-quality hormone increasing substances into chickens to enhance their growth.

Although chief justice of Pakistan marked safe the use of broiler chicken on the reports of Doctor Faisal Masood, acting vice chancellor of University of Health Sciences, FDA disapproves it. However, Food and Drug Administration has worked on other ways to contain arsenic properties present in chicken; hopefully, Pakistan would make sure using the ways of mitigating arsenic in broiler chickens.

The arsenic is usually present in the liver of a chicken. According to FDA, “Alpharma, a subsidiary of Pfizer, Inc., decided to voluntarily suspend the sale of 3-Nitro® and to facilitate an orderly process for suspending use of the product in the United States. Ownership of the veterinary drug subsequently changed to Zoetis, Inc., who continued the suspension from the sale of 3- Nitro®.”

Hence, 3-Nitro is the basic cause of arsenic presence in chicken it’s being contained in the USA. Pakistani government needs to work on war-footings to eliminate the use of any such drug that produces inorganic arsenic in chickens to prevent cancer.
