Medical negligence in Pakistan is no surprise anymore for all of us. Cases after cases have been reported on a daily basis where patients have died due to the medical neglect of attendants at famous hospitals and have left the patients wondering which hospital to go to when ill. You must know that medical negligence is an act or omission that is deviated from accepted standards of practice resulting in an injury or death of a patient.

Just recently, another case of medicals negligence surfaced a few days ago when a few videos went viral on social media. The video was recorded at Al Rahim Hospital, Federal B Area, Block 13, Karachi where a patient was killed due to the negligence of drunk, male nurse who was in charge of the ICU ward at that time. The video showed a son of the deceased (mother) who was furious with rage, questioning the drunk nurse who was the only attendant there and no doctors were there to look after the patients in the ICU ward.

Upon reaching the ward, the son of the deceased was knocking on the door for half an hour and was finally allowed to come inside. When finding out the cause of death, it proved to be the removal of oxygen mask which reportedly resulted in the death of his mother.

In the picture below, the drunk male nurse is seen arrested and taken into custody by the orders of SP Gulberg, Bashir Ahmed Brohi. But, where were his superiors? Why was he the only one to be arrested for what he did?

Not only this but when the family of the deceased frisked his belongings, they found an empty bottle of alcohol in his bag, lots of medicines in his drawers which apparently, he never gave to the patients. There were no female attendants there to look after the female patients and this male nurse was the only one looking after the patients in the ICU ward in a DRUNK state.

This isn’t the first time a case like this has happened and happens worldwide. But such negligence where untrained staff and fresh graduates are assigned accountable duties should be taken into consideration because we as civilians deserve safe and high-quality health care. The health professionals should take strict actions against such negligence because playing with lives of others is no joke.

What is your take on this? How long will the nurse be imprisoned for?
