Chinese men have made a name for themselves in Pakistan but for reasons that are unpleasant. Since the CPEC project is underway, several Chinese nationals became temporary residents of Pakistan. However, several of their networks active here were brought to mainstream media and it shocked the general public of Pakistan.

As we know, Chinese men were marrying poor vulnerable Pakistani women under false promises of a better future in China, when in fact, once brought to their country they were either forced into prostitution or used for organ harvesting, allegedly. According to some of the women, they were even forced to work at pubs and bars which according to Pakistan’s culture is demeaning and humiliating for women.

Another story has emerged involving Pakistani-Chinese marriage, but this particular story isn’t dreadful at all. This story is of a girl, Rabia Kanwal who belonged to a poor neighborhood of Gujranwala, just 22 years of age was married off to a Chinese man that her parents thought was a wealthy man until she was taken back to his country. Upon arriving there, she realized that what was portrayed was not true at all.

According to Rabia, not only he wasn’t a Muslim but in fact, he was a poor farmer who lived with his parents and two brothers. She contacted the Pakistan Embassy, returned to Pakistan and filed for divorce.

Rabia and her husband Zhang Shuchen told two different stories. According to Zhang, he is a Muslim on paper however, he doesn’t believe in this religion. He stated that he told her he wasn’t Muslim which was denied by Rabia. She also accused the Chinese family of locking her in a room trying to convince her to not leave, which was denied by the mother of Zhang. She even stated in her application for divorce that her husband forced her into illicit activities and that she would rather die than do those.

Clearly, Rabia’s visit to China was unpleasant as she mentioned the family didn’t even have proper washrooms. At least, thankfully, her story was far much better and we hope with the combined efforts of the Chinese embassy and Pakistani authorities no more vulnerable Pakistani women will be fooled and preyed upon by these nationals.
