Pakistan, since inception, has remained gripped by extremist elements that have forced the state to either track back on its decisions or succumb to the irrational demands of such acts. The recent chaos created in the country over the Asia Bibi blasphemy case is just another example of the same.

Yesterday, the honorable Supreme Court of Pakistan acquitted Asia Bibi on the lingering blasphemy case that has gone on since 2009. The case became the sole factor behind the assassination of former slain Governor of Punjab, Salman Taseer. Mumtaz Qadri, Taseer’s security guard, who shot him, became a role model for the fanatics. Apparently, Qadri ‘took revenge’ from the Governor over his support for a blasphemer.

Since Taseer’s demise, the country has fallen prey to blasphemy allegations and the fear that comes with the clause. Some time back, a young student of the Abdul Wali Khan University in Mardan, Mashal Khan Yousufzai was falsely lynched by an angry mob over false accusations of blasphemy.

And now, it seems, that Khadim Rizvi and his religious-politico party, The Tehreek-e-Labaik Ya Rasool Allah, want just the same. After the 3-member bench acquitted Asia Bibi overall charges and set her free, Rizvi with his team set out a statement demanding the killing of all 3 judges involved, which include the Chief Justice of Pakistan Saqib Nisar and the honorable justice Asif Saeed Khosa.

The party stated that as per Sharia, the three judges were now permissible to murder, and the leaders urged their followers to become ‘Mumtaz Qadris’ and make sure the judges are murdered. They went on to state that if it wasn’t possible for their followers, they would want the workers, staff, security, and others attached to these judges to carry out the ‘honorable’ job and prove their love for the Prophet PBUH.

The TLP leaders did not just stop there, they went on to state that the incumbent Chief of Army Staff of Pakistan, General Qamar Javed Bajwa was a non-muslim and ‘high-ranked’ generals in the military should overthrow him and stage a coup. Such rhetorical statements backed by the strength of their word on the street forced Prime Minister Imran Khan to address the nation and challenge this extremist mindset.

The fearless leaders stated that they did not care about going to jail or any other sort of persecution from the State, including death. The monumental decision of Asia Bibi’s acquittal has brought waves of joy and positive international attention to Pakistan, a country which is not always known for protecting its minorities.
