Do you know how many kids in Pakistan go to bed hungry? You probably don’t. According to Dawn newspaper, 22 percent of the Pakistani population is undernourished. That means 22 percent of our population can’t play a fully equipped role in Pakistani economy.

I am an 18-year-old from Rawalpindi, who is striving to provide groceries to needy families every month. The aim of my organization “Food pantry for the needy” is to eradicate hunger but also hope that the families would have spent money on buying groceries or it can be used to send their kids to school or buy them books.

Until last year, I myself wasn’t informed of our community facing hunger. I participated in KL-YES program where I spent an academic year in the US living with a host family, attending an American high school, and participating in their everyday activities. I was actively involved in the community there. I used to volunteer at local food pantries and I was very fascinated with the idea of it.

Upon my return from my exchange year, I thought of doing something similar in my community. Of course, I can’t do it on an enormous level right now because, in Pakistan, the concept of the food pantry is not practiced.

I started by collecting donations from my family and friends and looking for needy families. So far, I have helped 90 families in past 12 months. I buy and drop the groceries myself to ensure that I am helping people who are actually in need.

As I plan to expand this project, I am asking everyone to please consider donating to this cause. I assure you that your donations will be used for the aim stated above. You can help by donating packaged food or through cash. Please contact me through my Facebook page.
